Monty the boating coltriever has cruised to victory in the Canal Dog of the Year competition held to celebrate the milestone 200th anniversary of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.

Monty was snapped by owner Julie Morris while enjoying a tranquil cruise along the canal near Talybont-on-Usk last August. The photograph stole the hearts of dog lovers who voted in their droves for Monty to win the canine title ahead of his rivals. His success has earned him and his owner a weekend stay in a dog-friendly property, courtesy of Brecon Beacons Holiday Cottages.

In a tightly-fought competition shihtzu Maisie from Llangynidr, owned by Helen Griffey, came second. Magic, an English springer spaniel owned by Denise Thomas from Llangattock took third place.

Carol Williams, tourism growth officer for competition organisers Brecon Beacons National Park Authority said: According to our visitor surveys the canal towpath is one of the most popular walks in the National Park, especially with dog owners. Weve had dogs of all shapes and sizes enter the contest from all over the UK, and its been a fantastic way of promoting Brecon Beacons National Park and the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.

Dog owners were invited to enter their snapshots to be judged online every month. The dog with the most votes was chosen as the monthly winner and put forward to be judged for the ultimate accolade of Canal Dog of the Year 2012.

First prize winner Monty was the monthly winner in August and was featured in the November issue of Herefordshire and Wye Valley Life, alongside other winners for the first eight months of the year. Here are the overall prize-winning photos and the winners from the last four months of 2012.
