New writer Alex thinks up some creative ways to reuse and recycle wrapping and decorations this Christmas.
It’s that time of year when we all need to put some thought to Christmas and the gifts we might give. However, as the saying goes, “It’s the thought that counts”. It really is, so though you may not be in a position to splash cash on presents, you can make them make them look really beautiful by just a little thought and a bit of your time.
Wrapping: There is nothing wrong with either good old brown parcel paper or reusing old wrapping paper (provided it is intact and has not got writing over it from previous years). It is a dreadful waste to use perfectly good paper only once! You can jazz it up by using some ribbon, or strips of contrasting paper in a band to make it look just that bit different. Old strips of material will make a perfectly good wrapping or ribbon so no need to buy any, just cut up that old shirt!
Gift Tags: I could devote a whole column to this alone – there are so many things you could do, none of which need be costly! Plain old cardboard can be cut up luggage label style, tied on with beautiful ribbon or chunky cord with a hand written message. Pinking shears give a nice effect on the edge, and you can use anything to decorate the tag. Personalisation is the key, with simple pretty effects.
Better still, use a photo of the recipient, with a message on the back. Or simply cut a letter out of an old card, punch a hole to take a ribbon and tie it on to your gift.
