More than 2,000 spectators watched the firework display which signalled the beginning of weekend of festivities. A highlight was a service of celebration which came to a close outside with the unveiling of a specially-commissioned mosaic, the Apple Tree symbolising Herefordshire, its people, and its long tradition of cider-making. The Apple Tree was designed by Canon Sandy Elliott and constructed by Forest Pennant in the Forest of Dean.
